Rose Study, 5x8 watercolor by Stevie Denny

I haven't posted any work in so long. This past year I was caught up in 50th high school reunion planning, as well as volunteering for some other events, and time got away from me. Although I mostly paint in oils, I like to dabble in watercolors, and this past summer I spent some time practicing. This is a little rose study I did.

I don't know the name of these little purple flowers, but I love the color. I painted this from a still life set-up in Krista Eaton's class this past week at Scottsdale Artists's School. I haven't painted sunflowers in a while, so I did this little study to keep in practice. This painting is on a small deep-edge canvas, so there's no need to frame it. The sides are painted black (actually, the background and the sides are Payne's Gray acrylic -- not quite black).

This painting is for Claudine, someone I've known for 50 years. Claudine and I went to high school together; and after high school, Claudine opened a successful beauty salon in Burbank, California. When my son Chris was 14, he went with me to the salon one day, and he saw Julie -- Claudine's daughter. It was love at first sight; and many years later, when they were in their 30s, Chris and Julie were married. Now Claudine and I share two adorable grandsons. She is a caring, generous and special person.

I got the inspiration for this painting from a local restaurant in Mesa, AZ called Rancho de Tia Rosa. It has a beautiful patio with ever-blooming flowers. Both the architecture and the food are wonderful! Unfortunately, Tia Rosa had a fire last December, and it's are still being reconstructed. They hope to re-open in December. If you're in Mesa, Arizona this is the place to go for some local color and great Mexican food!

This painting ships unframed,but it will fit a standard 12x16 open-back wood frame, available in most arts and crafts stores.

This painting is from a photo of a still life setup that I took at Scottsdale Artists' School, while taking a class from Joni Falk a few years ago. I'm donating this painting to the Mesa Arts Center's annual 10x10 Exhibit that's held each year on October 10. All paintings sell for $100.

I love to paint sunflowers. They always seem so happy to me. This painting is not for sale right now, but it will be for sale at the fund-raiser for Gilbert Visual Art League in Gilbert, AZ on November 15. This is our annual 5x7 sale, where GVAL members donate the paintings and they are all sold for $25.00 each. Last year we had over 200 5x7 paintings for sale.The sale will be outdoors on the lawn at Postino's Restaurant in Old Town Gilbert. If you live in the area, come on out and see us!

I recently painted these roses at a session with my friend Krista Eaton, picked fresh from her garden.

While I was putting on the final touches back at my own studio, I had just finished and was moving this painting from my easel to a shelf. Somehow it slipped from my hands and landed face-down on the floor. Since we have two dogs, of course it picked up some of their fur. It seems like the fur never goes away, no matter how often we vacuum. I carefully removed as much of the loose hair as I could with a soft brush, but it's safe to say that Missy and Chewy have contributed something to this painting, too!
