Desert Bloom, 6x6 oil painting

Desert Bloom
6x6 oil painting
on deep edge canvas

I painted this from a photo I took yesterday of my neighbor's beautiful blooms on her cactus.  The southwestern desert is full of color right now, with so many different plants in bloom.

This is painted on a deep edge canvas, and the edges are painted black -- no need to frame.

Southwest Symbols, mixed media painting

Southwest Symbols
7.25" x 6.75"
Mixed media painting on wood block

This is very different from the work I usually post.  I created this in a class with Rob Stenberg, a local mixed media artist who is currently at the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale.  I had great fun creating this work; and I want to do more.  I have lots of ideas for the techniques used in this piece.

Water Lilies, 6x6 oil painting

Water Lilies
6x6 oil painting
on Raymar cotton panel

I have visited many of the California missions, and one of the things I love is that many have beautiful fountains.  Those that are working fountains often have floating water lilies in a variety of colors.  I painted this from a photo I took of the fountain at San Juan Capistrano, one of the most beautiful missions.

Fall Color, 8x10 oil painting

Fall Color
8x10 oil painting
on Raymar cotton panel

I painted this still life from a photo of a still set-up in a class that I took at Scottsdale Artist's School a few years ago. I try to photograph all the set-ups when I'm there -- they make great studies.

This painting is available through an online auction on Daily Paintworksbut it will need to dry for about two weeks before I can ship it.

El Rancho, 12x16 Oil Painting

El Rancho
12x16 oil painting
on stretched canvas

I got the inspiration for this painting from a local restaurant in Mesa, AZ called Rancho de Tia Rosa. It has a beautiful patio with ever-blooming flowers. Both the architecture and the food are wonderful! Unfortunately, Tia Rosa had a fire last December, and it's are still being reconstructed. They hope to re-open in December. If you're in Mesa, Arizona this is the place to go for some local color and great Mexican food!

This painting ships unframed, but it will fit a standard 12x16 open-back wood frame, available in most arts and crafts stores.

This painting is available for purchase through an online auction at Daily Paintworks.

Canyon Colors
8x10 oil painting on stretched canvas

I visited the Grand Canyon a few years ago, and I took many photos while I was there for painting reference.  I don't remember the name of this location, but it's along the South Rim.  I love the shapes and colors of the canyon, and the vastness of the landscape.

This painting is unframed, but it's on a traditional style of stretched canvas, so frames are readily available in most arts and crafts stores.  There are also several online sites that sell quality frames.

This painting is available through an online auction at Daily Paintworks.

Bulldog Rocks, 3x4 tiny oil painting

Bulldog Rocks
3x4 oil painting
on stretched canvas

Bulldog Rocks are in the Salt River wilderness area, just a few miles from where I live in Mesa, Arizona. People come from all over the world to see these giant rocks that look over the Salt River, especially when the late afternoon sun turns them to gold. The best place to view them is from a place called Water Users, off the Bush Highway (Water Users refers to the place where people put in kayaks and tubes on the Salt River). This is a TINY painting -- just 3x4 inches, but a cute little thing. It's not framed, and I don't recommend framing due to its small size. It would best be displayed on a small display easel, which I will happily provide for free to the buyer of this painting.

This painting is available through an online auction at Daily Paintworks.

Grape Vine, 10x8 acrylic painting

Grape Vine
10x8 acrylic painting
on archival cotton panel

This painting is a little different from my normal style, but it was fun to do. My local art group, the Gilbert Visual Art League, had a summer project to complete a macro (close-up) painting. While I was visiting some of the California missions this summer, I took close-up photos of some grapes on the vine at Mission San Antonio de Padua, north of San Luis Obispo. That became my macro subject, and voilà -- here's the finished piece!

This painting may be purchase through an online auction at Daily Paintworks.

El Rancho, 12x16 oil painting

El Rancho
12x16 oil painting
on stretched canvas

This painting was inspired by a local restaurant in northeast Mesa called El Rancho de Tia Rosa. Unfortunately, the restaurant had a fire last December and has been closed since then. But they are going to reopen in about two months. It's sad to think the beautiful building was damaged so badly, and I do hope they'll be able to restore its original look.

I've posted this painting before, but I made some minor adjustments to it, so I'm re-posting it.

This painting may be purchased online through Daily Paintworks.

FIrst Place Award!

Sky Dreamer
14x11 watercolor on 140 lb.Fabriano hot press paper
Not for Sale

I'm pleased that my painting "Sky Dreamer" won first place last night in the Watercolor Division at the Gilbert Visual Art League Show.  We had a great opening reception!  The show is at the Gilbert Historical Museum (Gilbert Rd. & Elliott), and it will run through March 29.

I painted Sky Dreamer as a Christmas gift for my husband Bob.  He volunteers with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in the Aviation Division.  A lifelong pilot, he is happiest in the sky.

A special thanks goes to Kim Johnson-Nechtman, who has taught me so much about watercolor portraits.

Now, back to mission painting... this is a little study I did just to keep in practice.  It's from one of the hundreds of photos I took when I visited Mission San Juan Capistrano a few years ago.

Red Mountain Sunset
6x8 oil painting on Raymar canvas panel

I live at a place called Red Mountain in Mesa, Arizona.  We are right next to the Tonto National Forest and the Salt River Recreation area.  I painted this from a photo I took along the Salt River, as the sun was setting against Red Mountain.

Red Rock Sunset, 8x10 oil painting

Red Rock Sunset
8x10 oil on Raymar canvas panel

I took a trip to Sedona a couple years ago, and I was lucky to get some nice sunset photos.  I painted this from one of those photos.  What the heck is the name of this location?  I can't remember, but it's right off the main road in Sedona.

Prickly Poppies

Prickly Poppies
5x7 watercolor on 140 lb. paper

Prickly poppies grow wild in the desert southwest.  As pretty as they are, they are poisonous to animals.  I guess the prickly part is a warning!   I painted this from a photo I took several years ago.    This painting is unframed, but will ship with a white acid-free  matte, ready for framing.

Sky Dreamer, 14x11 watercolor painting

Sky Dreamer
14x11 Watercolor on 140 lb. Fabriano hot press paper

I painted this portrait of my husband as a gift for him.  Bob has volunteered with the  Maricopa County Sheriff's Posse for the past 13 years.  While he has served in several different positions, last year he was thrilled to have been given the opportunity to serve in the Aviation Division as a Technical Flight Officer (second in command).  A lifelong aviator from a family of aviators, Bob earned his helicopter certification last year, realizing the dream of a lifetime.  One of his co-workers had taken this photo of him in the helicopter, and when I saw the subject matter, I knew I had to paint it.  It is the most difficult and complicated painting I've ever done.

Purple Cactus Flower, 6x6 oil painting

Purple Cactus Flower
6x6 oil painting on Raymar canvas panel

I often paint cactus flowers.  There are so many varieties and colors here in the southwestern desert.  I take as many photos as I can each spring when they bloom, and I painted this from one of my photos.  Thank you for viewing my art.
